At Pelham Emergency Management, our goal is to protect the community by coordinating and integrating all activities necessary to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other man-made disasters, ultimately aiming to minimize loss of life and property.

Additionally, we look to focus on community engagement. By working with residents, whether individually or as part of groups, we aim to raise awareness about the natural and human-made challenges we may encounter. Through education and outreach, we help equip our community with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate potential disasters and safeguard their well-being.

Preparedness List

Preparedness is a cornerstone of a resilient community. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) emphasizes the importance of creating personalized Family Emergency Plans. According to MEMA Director Kurt Schwartz, “Developing and practicing a Family Emergency Plan before a disaster occurs can enhance safety, protect property, and strengthen community resilience.”

Here’s how to start building your own Family Emergency Plan:

1. Choose an Emergency Contact:
  • If possible, designate an out-of-state relative or friend as your family’s emergency contact. Communication with someone outside the affected area may be more reliable in a disaster.
  • Make sure each family member has access to this contact’s information on their mobile devices or written down.
2. Set Meeting Points:
  • Identify two gathering locations: one near home and another farther away, in case evacuation becomes necessary.
3. Plan Evacuation Routes:
  • Map out how to leave your home quickly and determine multiple evacuation paths to reach your chosen meeting points. Don't forget medications!
  • Consult your local emergency management agency for advice on established evacuation routes.
4. Shelter in Place Guidelines:
  • Designate a secure space in your home with minimal doors and windows, equipped with essential supplies and communication devices.
  • If you depend on medical treatments at home, collaborate with your healthcare provider to ensure continuity during emergencies.
5. Special Needs Considerations:
  • Tailor your plan to accommodate seniors, individuals with disabilities, children, and pets to ensure everyone’s safety.

By taking these proactive steps, you can not only protect yourself and your loved ones but also contribute to the broader resilience of Pelham.
